Report: Apple to release 6.5-inch iPhone next year; all 2018 models to sport the 'notch'

If you are holding off on buying the Apple iPhone X, hoping that next year's model won't have the infamous "notch" at the top of the screen, better sit down. According to a report issued by Japanese securities firm Nomura (which was obtained by Business Insiders), all three versions of the 2018 iPhone will come with the notch. What is interesting is that one model will feature an edge-to-edge LCD screen instead of the OLED panel that will be found on the other two 2018 units. This device will offer Face ID and will be considered a mid-range unit priced at $650 to $900. It will have just a single camera on back, and will not come with Force Touch.

Of the remaining two iPhone handsets expected next year, both will carry an OLED display. One will feature a 5.8-inch screen and will be considered the sequel to the iPhone X. The second model will sport a huge 6.5-inch screen and will come with support for dual SIM cards. Today's report matches earlier talk that claimed iPhone units won't come with a rear-facing 3D sensing camera until 2019. A rear-facing snapper with capabilities similar to the TrueDepth Camera found on the iPhone X, would help Apple in its goal to make the iPhone a big player in AR.

The report by Nomura adds that the lower priced 2018 model will be manufactured by Pegatron, and perhaps Wriston. The more expensive units will be assembled by Foxconn, which is the only contract manufacturer currently making the iPhone X.

Nomura used its own supply chain surveys to come up with the information that it sent out to its clients, but the securities house noted that things can still change as suppliers won't have their orders finalized until the first or second quarter of next year.
